Groundbreaking of joint housing project for typhoon victims in Dumaguete set April 30
The Social Action Center of the Diocese of Dumaguete, the city government, and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action, will lead the groundbreaking rites for a low-cost housing project for victims of tropical storm “Sendong”, on April 30.
Fr. Burton Villarmente, head of the SAC, said the construction will start after the groundbreaking in the 5,000 square-meter lot in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete.
He added that 115 housing units are targeted for the identified beneficiaries, but only 70 will be constructed in the first phase, due to limited space. The rest of the houses are to be built in the coming months when another site is identified, Villarmente said.
The city government provided the Bajumpandan lot, while the CBCP-NASSA and the Diocese of Dumaguete are in charge of the construction of the houses, he added.
Outgoing Dumaguete Bishop John Du is expected to bless the units on May 7, before he assumes as Archbishop of Palo, Leyte, two days after.*JFP
