Privatization not an answer
to power crisis, Zubiri says
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Privatization is not the answer to the power crisis being experienced, not only in Mindanao, but in other parts of the Philippines as well, former Senator Miguel Zubiri said.

He suggested instead the immediate repair and rehabilitation of damaged turbines and water impounding systems of two hydro electric power plants in Iligan and Bukidnon, amounting to P2 billion, to meet the power demand of Mindanao, which is 1,400 megawatts.

He said that in his home province of Bukidnon, they are experiencing a daily brownout of up to six hours. There should be funding to rehabilitate government power plants that are rotting, and to see to it that existing laws, like the Renewable Energy Act, are implemented.

Opening of Bataan
nuclear plant pushed
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A former member of the House of Representatives is pushing for the opening of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant as the best option in solving the power crisis in Mindanao and the country.

Mark Cojuangco, former representative of the 5th District of Pangasinan, who was in Dumaguete City recently, said he made a study on the safety of the nuclear power plants built during the first nuclear era, one of which is the BNPP, which is 70 percent more updated than the longer running nuclear power plants in America today.

He added that the decision of Malacañang not to open the BNPP will not stop him from going around the countryside informing the people about the country’s potential for nuclear energy.

Groundbreaking of joint housing project for typhoon victims in Dumaguete set April 30

The Social Action Center of the Diocese of Dumaguete, the city government, and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action, will lead the groundbreaking rites for a low-cost housing project for victims of tropical storm “Sendong”, on April 30.

Fr. Burton Villarmente, head of the SAC, said the construction will start after the groundbreaking in the 5,000 square-meter lot in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete.
