defend PRISAA title

Western Visayas defended the women's athletics and reclaimed the men's side after collecting eight more gold medals in the 2012 PRISAA National Games held at Cebu City Sports Complex yesterday.

Athletes from Panay won the last two relay events in easy fashion asserting themselves for eight more gold medals in the day while topping their respective heats early on Wednesday.

The Hiligaynon-speaking runners won the men and women's 4 X 400 relay in addition to their dominance in another relay, the 4 X 100 hurdles. Tuesday.

The women's quartet of Rona Mae Villasis of Hercor College in Roxas City, Capiz; Jerlyn Bornales, Michelle Villas and Evejiel Baclas all of Colegio de la Purisima also of Roxas City won the event in 4 minutes 02.45 seconds clocking, ahead of of Central Visayas in 4:06.52 seconds and Ilocos Region in 4:10.11 seconds.

The men's quartet of Louis Azarraga, Joepet Asdolo,and Joseph Biñas all of Western Institute of Technology in Iloilo City and Ruel Gasinao of Colegio de la Purisima of Capiz clocked 3 minutes, 21.72 seconds ahead of CALABARZON (3:22.48) and Central Visayas with 3:23.51 seconds clocking.

With eight more gold medals in the day, Western Visayas collected 23 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals; Central Visayas with 11 golds with addition of Mary Joy Tabal dominance of women's 10,00 meter run, 11 silver medals after coming out with a runner up finish in the women's 4 X 400 relay and 7 bronze medal with another four in the men's 4 X 400 relay.

Casear Castañeto of CAR won the men's 10,000-meter run (33:16.90) ahead of two Southern Mindanao runners, Anthony Nerza (34:32.80) and Arnie Macañeras (37:30.90) for silver and bronze medals respectively.

Cagayan Valley's Meynard Curibang ruled the men's pole vault in 3.10 meters, followed by Southern Mindanao's Simon Gubal in 3 meters and Vilmar Ballad also of Cagayan Valley settling for the bronze medal.

Ernesto Ibañez Jr. and Lorna Olarita, both of host Central Visayas were adjudged the most outstanding athletes with three gold medals each.

Western Visayas coaches, Fritz Dorado of Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion was the most outstanding female coach and Noel Diel of Western Institute of Technology of Iloilo City in the male side.

Depending on the final outcome of ball games, Central Visayas is still leading the race for the overall championship, followed by Western Visayas and CALABARZON and Southern Mindanao.*PNA
