Sun past Akasya

Peewee Demonteverde hit five triples in the final quarter to lift Sun Cellular past Akasya Grill, 85-84, Tuesday night in the 1st PROBAC/LNA7 Invitational Basketball Tournament at the West Negros University gym.

Sun played a big first half game with a 43-32 lead behind Toto Torre’s 14 points in the opening quarter while Dave Dokto delivered 10 points and JR Fernandez scored eight in the second period.

Akasya bounced back in the third quarter with a 27-5 blast as Paolo Diaz ’s 13 points and Japhet Cua’s 8 points to post a 59-48 tally at the end of the period.

With Sun trailing a 16-point advantage at the start of the final period, Demonteverde alongside Patric Echarri and Fernandez worked hard for the needed points, which later paid off.

Sun launched a total of seven treys in this quarter to outpoint Akaysa at the buzzer, despite the 10-point output of ace center Mark Kong.

Demonteverde anchored Sun Cellular’s last quarter run with 22 points as Fernandez backstopped with 16 points, Torre added 14, Echarri with 13 and Dokto with 10 points.

Meanwhile, Diaz led Akasya with 19 points while Kong had 15, Cua with 8, and Hans Schulze and Christer Isulat with 6 points apiece.*
