Cadiz City chess wizard Xavier John Verdun defeated Silay City FIDE Master Sander Severino to capture the 2012 Negros Chess Rapid championship 30-minute 7-round Swiss System at the Negros Integrated Chess Association Chess Gallery at the Centroplex Mall in Bacolod City.
Verdun collected 6.5 points in topping the tournament, while Severino had 5.5 points for second.
Severino’s last match against La Carlota's Edsel Montoya (5.5) ended in a draw.
Verdun received P3,000 cash prize and a prestigious glass trophy while Severino got P2,000 in cash.
Michael Ocido (6.0) of Victorias City forced Gary Baltar in submission to receive P2,000 in cash.
Aside from Verdun, Ocido, Severino, Baltar and Montoya, the other players who landed in the tourney's top 10 were National Master Rodolfo Toledo, Jose Vito Tapulgo, Ellan Asuela, Ted Ian Montoyo, and Bryll Arellano in that order.
