Tanjay dads to consult
public on helmet law

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Officials of Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, will gather reactions and proposals from concerned sectors on the implementation of the mandatory helmet law on August 1.

Councilor Uldarico Mariano Ramirez III said the city government has yet to get the public pulse on the law that has become an issue between those for or against it.

Public sentiment in Tanjay tends towards the impracticality of wearing helmets around the city streets, he said, adding that many are raising questions over the “inconvenience” of having to put on their helmets on short drives, such as ferrying their children to school or going to the market.

Solon willing to probe
high fuel price in NegOr

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District) said he is willing to conduct a congressional inquiry into the high costs of petroleum products in the province.

Arnaiz issued the statement amid mounting public clamor against a perceived monopoly of fuel prices in Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental, with pumping stations carrying a uniform rate for gasoline and diesel fuel.

In Dumaguete, a liter of gasoline costs at least P6 more, while diesel fuel is higher by at least P3 a liter, compared to the prevailing pump prices in other areas like Cebu and Metro Manila.

BY RENE GENOVE

The 6th Triennial Awards for the outstanding individuals and institutions in the Visayas will be presented by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., a Cebu-based nongovernment organization, March 22 at the Marco Polo Plaza in Cebu City.

Dominica Chua, chief operating officer, said the RAFI Awards, conferred every three years, are given in two categories: the Ramon Aboitiz Award for Exemplary Individual, and the Eduardo Aboitiz Award for Outstanding Institution.

It was launched in the Visayas and Mindanao in 1996 to give recognition to institutions and individuals who committed themselves to building a more humane, equitable, and caring society.
