The number of motorcycle drivers apprehended in Bacolod City for having passengers below 7-years-old, which is prohibited by the law, is now very alarming, City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, said yesterday.
He said that since the City Police Office launched the “Oplan Katawhayan sa Dalan” in April, 74 motorcycles had been caught having passengers below 7 years old.
“We have observed that, despite our intensified campaign against having children 7-years-old and below riding motorcycles, many drivers still defy it”, De la Paz said.
“We want to sustain the campaign to make the people aware and reduce the number of accidents in the streets involving minors, but we need the cooperation of the people”, de la Paz added
Under the law, children should not be allowed to ride motorcycles as they lack the physical development to pay attention and properly secure themselves while riding. Anyone violating it will be meted a fine of P3,000 to P10,000.
Land Transportation Office-Bacolod chief, Norman Saril, said their agency is not remiss in reminding motorists not to allow children 7-years-old and below to ride motorcycles, but many still do not comply.*APN back
