City holds clean up drive

Bacolod City officials and employees conducted another cleanup drive on a voluntary basis in Bacolod City yesterday, a press release from City Hall said.

The cleanup drive was conducted along the span of the Carlos Hilado Highway, from C.L. Montelibano Drive on the north to City High-Mansilingan Road on the south, and the span of the Burgos Street, from Carlos Hilado Highway on the east and BREDCO Port Entrance on the west, it said.

The volunteers brought with them tools and implements to sweep off dirt from the streets, weed out and cut grasses and shrubs, paint gutters white, scrape posters on posts and walls, and pull-down unkempt streamers.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia encouraged city officials and employees to render voluntary service in support of the cleanup drive as the previous ones done in February and March this year have encouraged Bacoleños to make their surroundings clean.

The cleanup drive was administered by the Task Force Clean and Green overall chairperson Myrna Servando, a high-ranking officer of the Lions Club, and her three vice chairpersons, Councilors Em Ang, Sonya Verdeflor and Mona Dia Jardin, the release said.

Servando said the cleanup drive is the Task Force contribution to the preparations for the weeklong celebrations of the Philippine Independence Day, Bacolod City Charter Day and the birthday of Dr. Jose P. Rizal on June 12, 18, and 19, respectively, it said.

Since last week, task teams of Task Force Clean and Green have worked double time in the maintenance and upkeep of median island and pocket gardens, the release said.

Elma Advincula reported that the upkeep of four pocket gardens at Roxas-Lacson streets, Barangay 39 and the old Airport were already done and that the trimming of the median island gardens were also given attention.

Servando said that the two pocket gardens at the corner of Lacson Street and North Capitol Road (along PNB), and the corner of Lacson Street and South Capitol Road (DBP) will be rehabilitated and enhanced by the Orchids Society.

Before the celebration of the Independence Day on June 12, the Task Force Clean and Green will assist City General Services Officer Jerome Solinap in improving the beautification of the Bacolod Public Plaza.

Earlier, Solinap reported that there has been perceptible changes in the cleanliness and beautification of the Public Plaza and that two of the four fountains are already operational, the release said.

Servando obtained the support of the Lions Club in rehabilitating one of the non-operational fountain, while Ang secured the help of the Kanla-on Club. for the repair of the other one.*
