Focus on protocol
and the aged

Rolly Espina

The triple induction of three Lions Clubs of District 301-31-B tomorrow at the Business Inn may prove an example of the importance of protocol in the arrangement of an official Lions function, according to Lions president Noring Tonogbanua of the Bacolod Capitol Lions Club.

Tonogbanua said the officers of Bacolod Capitol, the host club, have practiced well the protocol and promised that there will be no hitches insofar as that is concerned.

Tonogbanua is assisted by former president Alfonso Manayon, another veteran of Lionism.

One thing significant was that the veterans of Lionism have volunteered to make sure that things will pan out right. Precisely the reason why Tonogbanua, who will be president for the second time had been chosen by the club to lead them.

Old guard had noticed a lot of errors in the observance of protocol in Lions. But protocol is precisely needed to avoid mistakes and irritants.

Thus, the reason for their decision to field Tonogbanua to be the current president.

Tonogbanua, also stressed that there were many problems that must be addressed by a club and its members but he emphasized the importance of the Lions battle-cry: Liberty and Intelligence are our Nation’s Safety.

Secretary Zenaida Parcon pointed out that one of the prime projects of the Lions is the medical mission and visit to the residents of the St. Mary’s Home for the Aged in Barangay Alangilan.

“But that’s just one of the retirement homes we are reaching out to,” Ms. Parcon said.

The officers of the club include past president Biong Marañon, 2nd vice president Winnenona Yokota, 3rd vice president Fe Gutierrez as assistant secretary to Zenaida Parcon and Steve Po as treasurer with Mona Po, his assistant treasurer.

Humbert Espina is the tail twister with Lions Joules Villanueva as the Lion Tamer.Auditor is Ofelia Martir with Evelyn Slinket as the business manager.

Marlou Mills is chairman of the membership committee with Stella Lopez, as vice chairman and Melinda Manayon as member.

Other members are Johnny Cua, Derek Mills and Norma Parcon, directors for two years with Joules Villanueva, Edith Espina and Bernabe Sibug as directors for one year.

I am the charter president of the 38-year-old Lions Club.

Danilo Lim, the customs deputy commissioner for intelligence, has been a guest speaker.

District 301-3-1-B Governor Fo Yuan III will deliver the inspirational message. He will also induct into office the three presidents and officers of the three clubs.

Former District 301-B Governor Pompeyo Querubin will induct them.Former Governor FelipeLim will charge them.

My obsession with the triple induction seems to have distracted me from writing about political developments in our province as well as the excitement over the event.

But, perhaps, the one that has caught my notice was the 27th Negros Trade Fair at the Rockwell Tent in Makati City.

Among the prominent guests at the affair were Senator Sergio Osmeña III, Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr., former Press Secretary Teddy Locsin, and several prominent personalities.

Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. thanked Manila-based Negrense Chefs Nena Vargas Tantoco and Tonny Boy Escalante who cooked all the food served during the event.

The affair showcased various lamb dishes with the province vying for the title “Lamb Capital of the Philippines.”

Osmeña, incidentally, had also scored what he called the “Mother of all scams”, the billions worth of steel flyovers, including the one near Brgy. Bata.

When that was built, I was one of the critics, having seen how the same project in Iloilo City, ended up as a white elephant.

Anyway, I guess the best thing for the moment, is to concentrate on other matters not just politics. The campaign season will soon come up and the din will be on political matters.*
