Undertones at the FAMAS

Ninfa Leonardia

The Manila Bulletin and the Philippine Star carried the story of the FAMAS awards yesterday. They said the Best Actress award was given to Anne Curtis, but it did not say who presented it to her. Maybe it was because the title of the movie that won for her was “No Other Woman”?

***

And there was also the award for “Best Supporting Actress” that went to Angelica Panganiban, who has been in the movie gossip mill for several weeks now because of her separation from her loved one of several years, Derek Ramsey, and her new attachment to her recent co-star, John Lloyd Cruz. Interestingly, the movie that got her the award was titled “Segunda Mano (Second hand)” But she said one of the first to congratulate her was her “primero mano,” Ramsey. See how it is in moviedom?

And while we are at it, is Charice getting jealous of Jessica Sanchez? Or maybe it is only her new PR girl who is seeing green The woman, a blonde American, who was hired by Charice after kicking out her old Pinay promo girl, has been questioning the way Pinoys are welcoming Jessica who, she says, is not even a Filipino like Charice. But Jessica has been behaving and talking more like a true Pinay, unlike Charice who is said to be talking with a fake “kano” accent now, and sporting hairdos and get-ups that look grotesque.

***

It is obvious that success has gotten into the head of Charice, because her former supporters and admirers in the movie press are getting disgusted with her. Is it true that her former sponsors in the U.S. are also keeping their distance from her already? On the other hand, Jessica knows her onions, and always gives the right answers when interviewed by the media. Let us hope that she keeps being that way, and always have her feet planted on the ground.

It was sad to hear that popular singer Andy Williams has died of cancer. He was already 84, but had been so upbeat about getting cured that he even had plans to hold a concert this year. Alas, the CA was too fast for him, and he succumbed to it last Tuesday. Yesterday, a TV programs played his songs for almost an hour, and I was surprised to know that some of the most popular songs of the sixties up were by him, like “Love Story”, “Tonight”, “Days of Wine and Roses” and some “feel good” hits like “May each day be a good day.” The music world will miss him.

On the local scene, the provincial one, that is, it was quite amusing to hear that Vice Governor Lim-ao Alvarez wants to do an accounting of the sheep that the province had purchased in the past years. If Governor Freddie Marañon is inclined to joke, he could say that maybe his vice guv has difficulty sleeping, so he wants to count sheep. By the way, some people are saying that they will enjoy listening to a debate between the two former friends (until now, they both say) who will be tangling with each other come May.

E tu Luli? The only daughter of former President Gloria Arroyo is said to be considered for her mother’s post as congresswoman of Pampanga. Luli, who is the most unpoliticized member of the family, has not said anything herself, but reports say her Mom is still bent on filing her certificate of candidacy next week. But her unofficial doctor, Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez, continues to announce that GMA is still very sick, that she has lost a lot of weight, and may get worse if she does not get treated abroad. Well, the next few days will tell.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Health Department has become alarmed over the reported discovery of the new disease, said to be worse than SARS that had been identified in London. The person on whom it was found was from Qatar and had just come from Saudi Arabia, so the Philippines is looking out for arrivals from Saudi these days. The virus has been identified as the “Coronavirus”, which is different from the one that the Bureau of Internal Revenue is now trying to isolate.*
