Spider peddler nabbed;
NBI collars drug suspect

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A peddler of spiders was apprehended yesterday by tanods of Barangay Piapi, following complaints raised by parents of students and officials of the North City Elementary School in Dumaguete City.

Apprehended was Efren Tercio, 18, of Habitat I Dumaguete, from whose possession tanods confiscated several spiders and P198 in cash believed to be proceeds from the sale of the spiders to school children.

School officials expressed alarm over the safety of their students from big trucks and passenger buses that ply the route in EJ Blanco Road, where spiders are sold.

Tercio said he gives the proceeds from the sale of spiders to his mother. Each spider costs as high as P15, he added.

Apprehending tanods said peddlers also sell coupons to children for a few centavos, in exchange for the chance to win a spider.

Piapi barangay captain Jose Quitay warned peddlers they would be detained if they continue their trade.

Meanwhile, a suspected drug peddler was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation Tuesday, at Upper Lukewright, in Dumaguete.

The suspect was identified as Julius Ijan, who had served a jail sentence for selling drugs. NBI agent Miguel Dungog said seized from Ijan were one gram of suspected shabu.*JG
