Officials from three Korean companies installed a mini-hydro power plant Saturday capable of producing three kilowatts of electricity in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Murcia, Negros Occidental, a press release from Prison Import-Export Inc. said.
The installation is a pilot project for Small Scale Hydro Power Plant Initiative by Korean firms BIO CDM, Tae-Chang N.E.T. Co. Ltd. and Philippine-based ECO PIONEER PHIL CORP, the press release said.
The project's local partner is Prism Import-Export Inc.
Leading the installation of the hydro power plant's water-driven turbine were BIO CDM president and CEO Edward Ju, Tae-Chang N.E.T. president I. H. Jee, and ECO PIONEER PHIL project Manager Young Taek Jeon.
Also present were Prism's Dwight Carbon representing Prism's Roberto Montelibano, and local agricultural engineering consultants Antonio, Andy and Anne Abiera, the press release said.
Young said the facility is a low head hydro power plant that requires only a river current or tidal flow of 20 meters, or approximately 66 feet or even less, to produce energy.
"Using the current of a river or the naturally occurring tidal flow to create electricity may provide a renewable energy source that will have a minimal impact on the environment. This is our goal which is to provide the technology that promotes renewable energy," Young said.
Last month the group installed a solar power plant, also in Murcia, the press release added.*
