There is widespread objection to the proposal to open the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, and legislators are divided on the issue.
Rep. Pryde Henry Teves (Neg. Or., 3rd District) said that varied pronouncements from first world countries on nuclear power plants, are creating confusion.
While first world countries are telling us to go for renewable energy like wind, hydro or solar, they are also building so many nuclear plants, he added.
Teves said the United States of America is building 20 more nuclear power plants, and so with France and the rest of the world, and yet they’re telling third world countries to go renewable, when they know for a fact that RE costs more in terms of kilowatt/hour of electricity.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said the BNPP is an old structure and sits on a fault line.
San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito, meanwhile, said he believes it is about time the national government open its minds on considering nuclear energy as a source of power to address the crisis in Mindanao and other parts of the country.
But he stressed that safety measures should come first.*JG
