One killed, 1 injured;
manhunt on for cop
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

A man was killed and his brother injured when a policeman allegedly shot them in Brgy. Tangub, Bacolod City, at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, over an argument.

Greggy Alfonso, 23, of Purok San Roque, was hit on his chest and died while being treated at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Station 8 chief, Senior Insp. Jerick Filosofo said, yesterday.

His elder brother Rodolfo, 25, is also confined at the same hospital for a wound in his abdomen, Filosofo said.

Bacolod City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz has ordered a manhunt operation against the suspect identified as Police Officer 3 Kenneth Carbon Cerbo of Calinog town, Iloilo province, and a graduate of Class 1996 of the Philippine National Police, who evaded arrest.

De la Paz has coordinated with Senior Insp. Johnny Tumambing of Bingawan town police station in Iloilo, where Cerbo is assigned, as he might show up there.

De la Paz told the DAILY STAR that he was told by Tumambing that Cerbo had already sent surrender fillers yesterday.

Investigation showed that the Alfonsos were buying ice at a store in Purok San Roque when they confronted Cerbo and that led to an argument and, eventually, the shooting.

De la Paz said witnesses initially identified the gunman as Kenneth Baying, a policeman assigned in Iloilo.

The Bacolod City Police coordinated with the Iloilo City Police Office and the Iloilo Provincial Police Office and was told by Tumambing that one of his personnel, whom he identified as Cerbo, called him up informing him that he had shot somebody in Bacolod, he said.

De la Paz added that Cerbo, whose wife is working in the Middle East, usually spends his weekends in Brgy. Tangub, where he had built a house for another woman.

COP SURVIVES SLAY TRY

Meanwhile, a policeman whose life was spared by his dog tag when a clan member stabbed him last month at the Negros Occidental Capitol Lagoon park once again survived a slay attempt against him. This time it was a teenager who shot him but missed during a chase in Brgy.3, Bacolod City, Friday.

Police Officer 2 Ryan Lumogdang, 32, of Purok Cereza, Brgy. 3 was riding his motorcycle on his way home at about 9:30 p.m. when he saw Joemel Saavedra, 19, of Purok Kamunsil of the same barangay and his unidentified companion sitting in a bench in front of Andres Bonifacio Elementary School.

Lumogdang, detailed at Police Station 2, stopped, and was about to approached Saavedra and his companion but the two suddenly fled.

Lumogdang chased them and when they reached Purok Nangka, Saavedra fired a shot at him but missed, prompting the policeman to return fire hitting Saavedra on the back.

Saavedra, whom Station 2 chief, Senior Insp. Robert Dejucos said is one of the police characters in the area, was brought to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he is now confined.

A .38 caliber revolver with three bullets and a 9-and-a-half inch jungle knife were recovered from Saavedra, the police said.

Lumogdang was hospitalized on July 1 when he and his friend Mitchelle Santillan, 33, of Purok Mars in Brgy. Singcang Airport when members of a clan that he approached for questioning ganged up on him at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon park.

One of the suspects stabbed Lumogdang on the chest but hit instead his dog tag that apparently saved his life, police said.

Supects Edsel Esteban, 32, of Purok Kametal, Barangay Mandalagan and the alleged clan leader, Joemarie Alberto, 22, of Brgy. Gahit, E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental, were charged for frustrated homicide and direct assault on an agent of a in person in authority.

GUARDS APPREHENDED

Two security guards detailed in a compound in Purok Buri, Brgy. Mandalagan, Baclod were also apprehended by Station 3 policemen when one of them allegedly shot a suspected thief, who with an unidentified companion, stole an aluminum tube at their work place at about 3 p.m. Friday.

Station 3 chief, Senior Insp. Conrado Rances identified those apprehended as Julius Olasiman, 35, of Murcia town and Nico Han Manoza, 22, of Sipalay City, both in Negros Occidental.

Victor Panhilason, 20, of Santo Domingo, Brgy. Banago, who was hit in the head, is now confined in an undisclosed hospital in Bacolod.

The shogun used in shooting Panhilason was endorsed by the security guards to the police, while two empty shells of the same firearm was recovered from the crime scene.*APN
