DOE sees savings in
Visayas energy plan

MANILA – The Department of Energy has enlisted 12 other government agencies from the Visayas for the nationwide retrofitting of existing lighting systems with energy efficient alternatives, a government press release said.

The retrofitting program in the Visayas region was sealed following the signing of Memoranda of Agreement yesterday with 12 more participating government agencies, including four city government buildings, seven educational institutions and a state-owned hospital.

This initiative is part of the Philippine Energy Efficiency Project being implemented by the DOE which aims to, among others, improve the lighting systems of government offices and at the same time save on electricity expenditures and help reduce the country’s carbon emissions, the press release said.

The project is expected to generate potential energy savings of about 222 MWh, translated to around P2.22 million in monetary savings and annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The MOA signing comes after similar retrofitting campaigns in 35 government buildings in Metro Manila, the press releases said.

The DOE has expanded the retrofitting component of the PEEP to include 100 more government buildings from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, with additional potential savings of 6 GWh in energy corresponding to P 60 million, and annual emission avoidance of 3,246 tCO2.

The government building retrofit is part of the Efficient Lighting Initiative component of PEEP.

This component also includes national residential lighting, public lighting retrofit including streetlights, traffic lights, and solar-powered LEDs in off-grid areas, the press release said.

It will also entail the energy efficiency testing and lamp waste management which intends to expand the DOE’s existing testing laboratory and the establishment of a mercury waste management facility for recovery of mercury from used fluorescent lamps.

The PEEP aims to lower power demand in the country by influencing the consumption behavior of consumers both in the public and private sectors.

Aside from the PEEP, the state is also doing a Government Energy Management Program under the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program which, from September 2005 to December 2010, has already recorded savings of PhP1.6 billion in electricity and P261 million in transport fuel, the press release said.*
