Marañon to attend
NPC meeting

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday confirmed his attendance at the August 30 meeting of the Nationalist People's Coalition in Manila, which is also expected to be attended by the six congressmen of Negros Occidental, Vice-Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. and Kabankalan City Mayor Isidro Zayco, newly-designated NPC provincial chairman.

Marañon, who was ousted as the NPC provincial chairman for still unknown reasons, said he is not hoping for anything at the meeting.

He, however, said that his philosophy in life is “God has His own mysterious ways of doing things”, and added that “We may not like it, but it's good for us”.

Former Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco is also expected at the meeting where a decision will reportedly be made on whom to field for governor of Negros Occidental.

Marañon had earlier announced his intention to seek reelection as governor of Negros Occidental, while Alvarez has said that he is the choice of the NPC as candidate for governor in the 2013 elections.

Asked if he will abide with whatever decisions are made at the meeting, Marañon replied “If it is good for the province, I will abide”.

Aside from Alvarez and Zayco, Representatives Alfredo Marañon III, Mercedes Alvarez and Alfredo Benitez also confirmed yesterday their attendance at the meeting.

Marañon said the United Negros Alliance will be his main political party in 2013, but refused to reply when asked whether he is giving up on the NPC, which he used to head.

While he has no idea who will be the presiding officer, Marañon also clarified that it will not be a meeting of the UNA, a group of elected officials in Negros Occidental affiliated with different national political parties.

Alvarez said that the topics to be discussed may include their political line-up in Negros Occidental for the 2013 elections.

Zayco also doused speculations that he may run for governor if the position is offered to him. “I have already decided to run for mayor (of Kabankalan),” he said.*GPB
