A constitutional crisis?

Rolly Espina

Supreme Court Justice Renato Corona yesterday moved to seek the Supreme Court to intervene on the impeachment case against him, thereby creating a situation that could lead to a possible constitutional crisis.

Not only that, a big group of sympathizers could also provoke a popular interference by the public on this important issue. Some from the Iglesia Ni Cristo staged a demonstration seeking among others that the impeachment case be dropped.

But the Senate, however, appeared unfazed by those developments. The Senate court went through yesterday’s hearings without any signs of tension on being alarmed by these developments.

In short, we are in for a longer spectacle of charges and counter charges by the Senate tribunal

Yesterday, I also read a rejoinder by an amateur scientist in Federico Pascual’s column in the Philippine STAR that sort of reminded me what had long bugged me too.

This involves the question of what happens when the oil-hungry world pumps out so much of the earth’s oil deposits?

I had long asked myself that question. So far, except for that particular theory, I haven’t really received enlighten on my questions about the impact of the continued heavy pumping of underground oil.

But I also would like to point out that my initial opinion of what can happen also did not bear results.

Because, following that theory that when you get out so much oil from the underground deposits, sooner or later, something must be done to fill up the vacuum left.

Common sense and logical, Nature hates a vacuum, so to speak. When you remove a particular element, something must be done to replace it to maintain a balance.

The theory, to a certain extent, had been adduced the reason why there have lately been major crustal disturbances in various parts of the world. And that ultimately, those will become bigger and more violent and destructions.

Correct. The only problem is that these earthquakes and tsunamis are not affecting the Middle East where the major oil digging has been going on for a longtime now.

Well, one may reason that these occur in the rim of force, mostly in the Pacific. Everywhere and not over there where the bulk of the oil had been pumped out.

How come the earth’s crust movements are largely located along the Pacific rim? True, there may have been crustal movement in the areas where the digging and pumping had occurred. But the question is how come those are not the areas largely affected by the major earthquakes?

Well, up to a certain point I guess that question remains unresolved. But I do believe that my own misgivings have at least some logic. But later or sooner, we may find answers to our questions. We may soon find our land mass breaking up with the frenzied pumping by the oil-producing nations.

Incidentally, the preparations for the return of Iggy Arroyo’s remains to the Philippines seems to still be clouded by complications.

So, the only thing we can do is wait for the eventual outcome of the standoff between Grace Ibuna and Aleli Arroyo, wife of Iggy.

The problem is, I understand that Grace had managed to convince the London Mortuary which kept Iggy remains in the freezer that she is the legitimate wife of Arroyo. But the Philippine Embassy had reportedly intervened and convinced the British court that Aleli has legitimate claim to his remains.

But those are messages received from London from Bianca, Arroyo’s eldest daughter. So, we are as much in the dark as Mike Arroyo is.

In short, we just have to confine ourselves to waiting for the latest development in the long distance drama. Iggy must have known that his passing could bring heartaches to a lot more people than he had originally though of.

God rest his soul. He really needs our prayers for him to be able to truly enjoy a rest.*
