A German foundation has funded a workshop in jewelry making in Bacolod City participated in by members of the Association of Negros Producers and the Uswagon Calahunan Livelihood Association of Iloilo City.
The workshop titled “Let’s Bead Together” was held December 8-9, 2011 at the Showroom of the ANP by product designers Katja Drischmann and Anna Kamphues from Germany.
Drischmann said the first workshop they conducted in October 2011 taught participants how to make paper jewelry, while the second in December enabled them to make jewelry out of wood, bottle caps and other recyclable materials.
She said the participants from UCLA, who are garbage pickers, have already been working with paper beads and during the workshop, they were asked to something new and were paid.
They also learned to combine paper materials with others like bamboo and worked on paper mache and other kinds of lamination, she added.
Drischmann said that, on the second day, they presented their products to the jury and asked to explain them.
The first to tenth places got cash prizes, she said.
Big ANP producers like those who are into furniture business were also invited to the workshop so they could share their leftover wood with the participants, Drischmann said.
She said they will conduct more workshops in the future.*CGS
