Swiss posts bail for
child abuse raps

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

A Swiss national   posted bail recently  at a Negros Oriental trial court after learning  that a warrant of arrest had been  issued against him, for   charges of  child abuse.

Andreas Maurer,  a  resident  of  Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, posted a bond of  P80,000,  Chief Insp. Errol Garchitorena, Jr. of the  Guihulngan police said.

Maurer, who recently returned from a trip overseas, voluntarily surrendered to the police upon knowing he was wanted, Garchitorena said.

A man was killed and three others were injured when a wayward passenger bus rammed into a motorcycle and a tricycle early this week, at the national highway of Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.

Police identified the fatality as Marcelino Soreño, of Barangay Luka in Tanjay City, and those injured as Roderick Repollo, a tricycle driver, and his passengers, Lalaine Sayco and Nanette Sabillo.

Police investigation showed that the Land Master mini-bus driven by Arnold Calda, 34, married, of Barangay Igbalanac, Pamplona, was east bound when it lost its brakes and collided with the motorcycle and tricycle.

2 different laws prescribe
wearing of helmets: LTO

An attempt by  the police  in Negros Oriental to implement the “no helmet, no travel policy”  beginning next week, was met with  public outcry,  and political intervention succeeded in overriding the  plan.

The  announcements of Sr. Supt. Edward Carranza, provincial director of the Philippine National Police  and Roland Ramos, chief of the Land Transportation Office-Dumaguete District Office, to enforce the law on the  wearing of helmets by motorcycle drivers and their riders were overturned when Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo on Thursday sought  a “moratorium”.
