P76M allotted for repair of
Dumaguete City port

The Dumaguete City port RC Pier I will be rehabilitated with an allocation of P76.6 million by the Philippine Ports Authority and the Department of Transportation and Communications, a department press release said yesterday.

The amount is part of the P556 million allotment by the PPA-DOTC this year to upgrade and rehabilitate seven ports in the country, which are the Dumangas and Iloilo ports, Tabaco in Albay, Ormoc Port in Leyte, Lucena City port, Pio Duran in Albay, and the Dumaguete harbor, the press release said.

Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas said the agency hopes to generate interest among local companies to take part in the government’s effort to provide a convenient, affordable, reliable, efficient, and safe sea transport system through an open and transparent public bidding.

Negrense named
outstanding soldier

A resident of Tayasan town, Negros Oriental, has been selected as one of The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers for 2012, a government press release said.

Engine man Second Class Staff Sgt. Arce Balasabas, 48, of the Philippine Navy, is the winner of this year’s TOPS, an annual search organized by Metrobank Foundation Inc. and Rotary Club of Makati, foundation president Aniceto Sobrepeña said in his letter to Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo.

Balasabas joins the elite roster of Filipino soldiers recognized for their outstanding example of gallantry, dedication, commitment, professionalism, and integrity among members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Sobrepeña added.

PNRC to distribute shelter
cash vouchers in Neg. Or.

BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Philippine Red Cross Negros Oriental will distribute shelter repair kit rehabilitation cash vouchers worth P10,000 each to 110 residents of Guihulngan City, La Libertad and Jimalalud, affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake.

PNRC provincial administrator Louella Bael said the beneficiaries have been carefully screened and evaluated to ensure that they are not recipients of any housing program from the government or nongovernment organizations.

Priority was given to families with no permanent, or with seasonal livelihood, single parent and persons with disabilities, Bael added.
