Rebel killed, 2 hurt in battle
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

A suspected New People’s Army rebel yesterday died, while a civilian and a soldier were injured, in encounters in Moises Padilla and Escalante City, Negros Occidental.

Maj. Enrico Gil Ileto, 3rd Infantry Division spokesman, said the first encounter, that took place at about 2 p.m. yesterday in Sitio Nakuruhan, Brgy. Quinten Remo, Moises Padilla, was between members of the 11th Infantry Battalion Peace and Development Team and about 10 suspected rebels.

Cpl. Edward Robite, a PDT squad leader of the 11IB, suffered a slight injury in the head.

Ileto said pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels were still underway last night.

An hour later, troopers of the 2nd Maneuver Platoon of the 6th Regional Public Safety Battalion headed by Senior Inspector Antonio Benitez also encountered about 30 armed rebels in Brgy. Paitan, Escalante City.

Capt. Leo Christopher Cunanan, 303rd Infantry Brigade Civil Military Operations chief, said that a suspected NPA member was killed, while a civilian was injured.

Cunanan said the body of the slain rebel, whose identity has not been established yet, was recovered at the encounter site.

The two encounters took place as the elite troopers of the PNP Special Action Force joined government troopers in their internal security operations campaign in northern Negros.*GPB
