Storm victims to get
P25-M housing aid

More than 3,000 families in Negros Oriental, affected by tropical storm “Sendong” will receive about P25 million in housing assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development today, a government press release said.

The Emergency Shelter Assistance will be given in simultaneous payout rites at the Provincial Convention Center in Dumaguete City, and at the Tanjay City Hall.

All family-beneficiaries, whose houses were damaged by “Sendong” will receive P5,000 each to repair their homes, Jaybee Binghay of DSWD 7 said. Those with destroyed residences, but are not willing to be relocated, will each receive P10,000, she added.

LTFRB to draft bill of rights
for land transport commuters

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has been ordered by Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas to draft a bill of rights for jeepney, bus, and taxi passengers to protect them against abusive drivers and operators, its press release said.

The directive was issued at yesterday’s 25th anniversary of the LTFRB. Roxas said the bill of rights should be similar to the one being crafted for air passengers, and also include provisions that will safeguard drivers and operators against rude, offensive, and obnoxious passengers.

Roxas also ordered the LTFRB to improve procedures in issuing new land transport service route franchises; gradually convert public utility vehicles to use eco-friendly engines; and play a bigger role in the planned Integrated Transport System project, the press release added.

Seven students passed the screening for the medical school scholarship program of Negros Oriental.

They are Kristine Mae Abrasaldo, Sweelin Hope Pael, Lou Joseph Mapue, Feliciano Mahinay III, Rizza Joyce Mira, Shelanny Luba and Michael Jeffrey Pacurza.

Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo encouraged the scholars to strive hard and focus on their studies because the provincial government is expecting them to succeed and become doctors. He said the number of scholars has been increasing since the program was implemented in 2005.
