workshop slated

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Environmental Management Bureau has invited Bacolod City officials to a workshop on financial management and procurement in relation to the World Bank’s IPOP Management project on November 12 to 15 in Tanza, Cavite.

Bacolod City is among the six cities in the Philippines that can avail of a grant from the World Bank for the closure of their existing dumpsite along with General Santos, Legaspi, Cabanatuan, Iloilo and Butuan City.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia had signed a memorandum of agreement with DENR Secretary Ramon JP Paje on October 4 for the closure of the existing dumpsite where the World Bank will finance half of the total cost.

Councilor Mona Dia Jardin yesterday said she will attend the workshop on the IPOP project of the World Bank for Bacolod City to avail of a grant for the closure of its open dumpsite.

Also attending the workshop are Bids and Awards chairman Jerome Solinap, City Treasurer Annabelle Badajos and Honey Bee Borromeo of the City Planning and Development Office.

The city has allocated a budget of about P25 million for the closure of the open dumpsite in compliance with R.A. 9003 since they already have a sanitary landfill, she added.

Jardin said “We are very lucky to avail of the grant or the city will have to shoulder everything.”

She said they are partially operating the sanitary landfill with the Department of Public Services in preparation for its full operation and the full closure of the open dumpsite.

The technical working group also met earlier to reprogram another scheme for segregation in the barangay especially on information and education campaign, she said, adding that they have already created a team for the IEC.*CGS
