Firm stand vs.
coal, mining urged

The Social Action Center of the Diocese of Bacolod yesterday called on the public to stand firm in opposing the establishment of the coal fired power plant in Cadiz City and the ongoing mining activities in Sagay City.

SAC chairman Fr. Ernie Larida said people must understand the health and environmental effects of CFPP as not only the residents of Cadiz will be affected, but the entire Negros Island.

Dindo Ampalla, spokesperson of Cadiznon Kontra Coal, meanwhile, said they are happy that many groups and alliances support their cause.

He said environmentalists and other groups must unify and lobby to oppose the establishment of coal power plant in Brg. Banquerohan, Cadiz City.

CKC is still questioning the local government unit on the transparency of the transactions and in the approval of the coal fired power plant project since no public consultation has been made, Ampalla said.

Earlier, Cadiz City Mayor Patrick Escalante told the DAILY STAR that the Sangguniang Panlunsod had unanimously approved the move to accept the investor and endorse it to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources but clarified that the final decision will not come from them.

He also said schedules of public hearings on the matter were announced at their local radio broadcast stations, and published in newspapers, while public notices were posted at designated areas within the city.*LTG
