The University of St. La Salle has been awarded the hosting rights
of the 12th National University Games, after De La Salle-Dasmariņas gave up the
responsibility of staging the week-long multi-event competition in Cavite, USLS
sports director Roger Banzuela said yesterday. Banzuela also said that
beach volleyball will be played for the first time in the history of the Games,
which will be supported by the Commission on Higher Education. De La Salle-Dasmariņas,
the host of the Games in 2003, pulled out from hosting the UniGames because of
an ongoing revamp in its sports department, Banzuela said. In contrast,
Banzuela said the committees and venues are all in place if the Games are held
in Bacolod. The UniGames, a brainchild of former USLS president Bro. Rolando
Dizon, gathers about 2,000 athletes and coaches from about 40 schools all over
the country. Far Eastern University emerged as the winningest squad last
year finished its campaign with five crowns, followed by College of St. Benilde
and De La Salle University. Host USLS emerged as the top local school
with two titles. West Negros College took one title, the same output of Ateneo
de Manila University, San Beda College, University of the East and the University
of Santo Tomas. *CPT back to top
