Mighty-WNC football tilt set

Competitive football action returns to the West Negros College pitch on July 28 when the Mighty Sports Association-WNC 7-a-side Football Festival kicks off in Bacolod City.

The one-day festival, which is expected to draw close to 20 teams from both the men and women's divisions, is held in cooperation with the Negros Occidental Football Association. WNC coach Norman Fegidero said he will be fielding three teams in the men's division with Bacolod United also confirming its entry in the tournament.

The last time a competitive tournament was held at the WNC pitch was in September last year when the Visayas Under-19 Championships was held in the venue.

MSA spokesperson Dominic Uy, who played college basketball for De La Salle University and later saw action for the Iloilo Megavoltz in the now defunct MBA, said the tournament marks the first time their group has supported a football event.

"We saw during the SEA Games that football is really big here in Bacolod," Uy said at the launching of the football festival at the WNC President's Board Room yesterday.

Also attending the launching were MSA members Harlan Yu and Patrick Aquino, who also used to competitive basketball.

"We have a common goal, which is to promote sports in the grassroots. This (tournament) is a great opportunity for us to give back what sports has given to us," Uy said, adding that they may also venture to supporting other sports in the future.

The entry fee for the tournament is pegged at P500. Those interested to join the tournament may contact Johanna Ravilla or Anna Cabague of the WNC sports office at telephone numbers 434-5641 local 148 or 149. *CPT
