A sheriff of the Regional Trial Court in Guihulngan, Oriental Negros, was shot dead Monday night, while on his way home from the Negros Oriental State University where he is taking up law.

Police identified the victim as Ricky Montijar, 45, a sophomore law student of NORSU-Guihulngan campus who, initial investigation revealed, was waylaid and shot by unidentified persons. Montijar, a sheriff of the RTC Branch 64 under Presiding Judge Mario Trinidad in Guihulngan, was on his way home to Carmenville Subdivision in Barangay Bataria after 9 p.m. when the incident happened, investigation added.

Probers said it was not immediately known whether the shooting was work-related or due to a personal grudge. Initial and unconfirmed reports say that members of the New People's Army sparrow unit killed Montijar.

Oriental Negros acting Philippine National Police commander Supt. Juanito Condes has directed the Guihulngan police to conduct an investigation, and submit a follow-up detailed report on the incident.*JG
