Product quality, packaging needed
to compete in AFTA market: PTTC

BY MARICAR ARANAS

Nestor Palabyab, deputy executive director of the Philippine Trade Training Center, said yesterday that improved quality and enhanced packaging of goods are important factors for competing in the international market, especially with the implementation of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement in 2015.

Palabyab also said that the Philippines is one of the top producers of muscovado sugar and that should be developed so its international market value could also increase.

Sugar planters in Negros Oriental had earlier expressed apprehension over the possible collapse of the industry, once the AFTA is implemented, noting that products from neighboring countries can be imported to the Philippines at much lower prices.

Palabyab admitted that the sugar industry will be slightly affected by the AFTA implementation. He said they are introducing ideas and innovations that will help the sugar industry in Negros Oriental find alternatives for marketing the product.

Product quality and packaging should be properly maintained to meet international standards, he said. “Muscovado sugar is considered a health food by Europeans because of its quality and taste”, he added.

The Department of Trade and Industry and the PTTC conducted a briefing and orientation on AFTA for sugar planters in the province, to make them aware of opportunities for marketing sugar in the free trade areas.

Maitus Aldgeuer, president of the Bais-Tanjay-Manjuyod Sugar Planters Association, is challenging the government to help the sector, especially the small sugar farmers, with the impending AFTA implementation.*MA
