$1 for abortion

TIGHT ROPE
WITH MODESTO P. SA-ONOY

I was browsing in the internet to know more about Obamacare which is one of raging issues in the United States when I saw this title about $1 surcharge for abortion. This issue is an offspring of the contraception and abortion controversies that has recently taken center stage affecting the race for the Republic Party nomination. The EWTN has also devoted a lot of time to the discussion of this proposed health program of President Barack Obama.

The dollar for abortion is an insurance surcharge premium that the insured can take out so that in future when she wants to have an abortion she can claim coverage. This is like insuring one’s finger and claiming medical care and compensation for the loss. In the case of this dollar for abortion the woman can get an abortion without having to pay for it at the time of need, just like any other insurance policies.

It is not clear though how many abortions she can demand under one policy, whether it will be one time or several times as long as the policy lasts and the woman gets pregnant and refuses to take responsibility for the life created in her womb.

With some states legalizing abortion on demand, insurance companies are making money on the side. It is reported there are 55 million abortions as of last year – that’s 55 million helpless Americans killed. This is just a claimed number but it really does not matter whether the data is correct or only 10% of it or more because a single life is important, a life is a creature of God and therefore priceless.

We cannot interfere if the Americans commit mass suicide or like the ancient Incas, kill their children and eventually get wiped out because their President and his allies, including several in this country think that one has a choice to do whatever with his or her life or body. It is only the duty of the state to protect and even insure with financial assistance that right to choose.

In fact, they think that abortion is justified as removing an unwanted lump of meat in a woman’s body, just like removing an unwanted tumor or cancerous cell and as such is coverable by insurance.

Our concern as Filipinos is that many of the advocates, including President Aquino, are mouthing the same arguments as the American promoters of contraception and abortion as they push for their Reproductive Health Bill which is ironically called “health” but is actually intended to kill on the side. One must read the proposed Reproductive Health bill to see the similarities and read more to understand the end game of RH.

In the Obamacare there is coercion that threatens Catholics. He forces them to offer contraception on demand even if the act is contrary to conscience and belief. This is similar to the provision of the RH bill – comply or go to prison or pay a fine.

I wonder whether Obama would require that Muslims in the US armed forces have to eat pork or bacon because these are standard food in the armed services and not demand that they be exempted and provided with different food in respect to their beliefs.

In fact in the RH bill, employers and local government units are required to provide for contraceptive pills in the same manner as in the US Catholic hospitals and Catholic schools are to be forced to provide contraceptives and abortion otherwise they cannot receive federal aid. The Catholic Bishops Conference of America refused – some schools and hospitals would opt to close rather than violate their conscience and religious beliefs.

Obama offered a compromise – get insurance so that Catholics need not perform these “services” as they would be provided by the insurance companies. The bishops refused and now the stalemate.

The Obamacare thus went beyond health and medical care and intruded into the realm of moral and natural law and freedom of conscience. Some argue that Obamacare violates the US constitution on religious freedom and several groups are already preparing to challenge it in the Supreme Court.

The Republican candidate Ricky Santorum has gained ground because of his uncompromising stand against forced contraception and abortion while Newt Gingrich and Mitt Rooney who are not as vocal and appear to be willing to compromise to get the non-conservative votes are starting to slip.

The result of the US election, as usual, will have an impact in the Philippines. President Aquino is going back to the US soon and as had happened in the past after his meeting with Obama, Aquino and his congressional allies will renew their push for the RH bill which is stranded in the Congress and already out of their schedule.

Was Aquino summoned to Washington because of this? Are we also being sold for dollars?*
