Union election Nov. 29
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The certification election for employees of Vallacar Transit Inc., operator of Ceres buses in the Visayas, and the Bachelors and Rural Transit in Mindanao, will be conducted on Nov. 29.

The election is contested by employees under the Philippine Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial Workers Union, and those under the Associated Labor Union-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines.

More than 2,000 union members from Bacolod, 1,200 in Cebu, 800 plus in Iloilo and around 700 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, are expected to vote.

A certification election is the most democratic and expeditious method by which the employees determine the union that will act as their representative in their dealings with the company, particularly for purposes of collective bargaining, the JLP-Law blog said.

The ALU-TUCP Dumaguete, headed by Edgar Baldelovar, had earlier criticized some provisions in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, especially Article 12, Section 2, which states that, after 10 years of continuous service, the employee will be given the option to retire. He said that in most cases, the management’s option is always being followed.

ALU-TUCP district officer Felizardo Calimpong said the management should not interfere in the certification election.*JG
