CBCP to check housing
project in Dumaguete

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, who chairs the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action, is planning to visit Dumaguete City next month to check on the church-backed housing project in Barangay Bajumpandan, Fr. Burton Villarmente of the Dumaguete Diocese said.

Pabillo, who will meet with the Dumaguete clergy to discuss social action-related projects and activities, has expressed his appreciation to the Diocese of Dumaguete-Social Action Center for its successful implementation of the shelter project, Villarmente added.

Villarmente, who is the director of the Diocese SAC, said the CBCP-NASSA was also impressed by the way the Caritas Village Shelter Project is being carried out. It is the first project funded by the CBCP-NASSA for victims of tropical storm “Sendong” that already turned over housing units to the beneficiaries, he added.

Ordinance on anti-plastic bags
implemented smoothly: CENRO

BY ROMY AMARADO

The implementation of the anti-plastic bags ordinance in Dumaguete City that started August 28 has, so far, been going on smoothly, City Environment and Natural Resources officer Rey Awayan said yesterday.

Awayan said compliance with the regulation has been impressive, and stallholders in the market, both in the wet and dry sections, have been cooperating.

The market is the focus of the monitoring because it is where the use of plastic bags had been extensive, he said.

Program for PWDs to
be launched today

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Dumaguete Diocesan Electoral Board yesterday said the launching today of the “Fully Abled Nation” program for persons with disabilities and their participation in the 2013 elections will encourage PWDs to exercise their right to suffrage.

Msgr. Julius Heruela, DEB convenor and rector of the St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish in Dumaguete, said he hopes that, with the launching of FAN, more PWDs will register themselves as voters.

The three-year FAN program on disability-inclusive development is spearheaded by the Asia Foundation with support from the Australian Agency for International Development.
