Age-group tennis
tilt starts tomorrow

Young tennis players in Negros Occidental and neighboring areas are expected to see action when the Bacolod leg of the 2012 Philta-Palawan Pawnshop Regional Age-Group Championships opens tomorrow at the Center Court Tennis Club in Bacolod City.

The tournament in Bacolod is part of the six-stage circuit of the Philippine Tennis Association’s nationwide talent search.

Philta regional vice president Bong Arguelles said the competition at the Center Court will run until September 10, while the La Carlota Tennis Association will host the tournament on September 14 to 17.

Azarenka ousts Stosur
to reach US Open semis

World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka advanced to the US Open semi-finals for the first time with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5) victory over seventh-seeded defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia.

The 23-year-old top seed from Belarus ensured that she will remain atop the world rankings no matter what happens the rest of the way in the year's final Grand Slam tournament on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts.

"I don't want to stop yet," Azarenka said.
