BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Rabies Day Celebration in Bacolod City on Friday will start with a motorcade from the Bacolod City Government Center at 8 a.m. and end at the BAYS Center.

Acting City Veterinarian Rex Juplo said several groups are joining the motorcade, among them the K-9 Club, Dog Form Club and two motorcycle clubs. They are also inviting dog enthusiasts to join the activity, he said.

A mass vaccination of dogs will be held at the Liga ng mga Barangay Hallafter the motorcade.

A program will follow at 1 p.m. at the Liga ng mga Barangay Hall where they will discuss and get feedback on City Ordinance 544, Series of 2011 authored by Councilor El Cid Familiaran.

He said acting City Administrator Goldwyn Nifras will give the opening remarks, Mayor Evelio Leonardia will deliver a message, and their speaker is Familiaran.

Juplo will deliver the closing remarks.

C.O. 544 is an ordinance establishing dog-owners responsibility, requiring enclosures or fenced-in yard for pet dogs as preventive measure against occurrence of rabies injury, damage and other hazards.

Juplo said that, as of 2012, they have no recorded cases of human rabiesThe last time was in 2005, he said.

They have recorded only two positive dog rabies cases from January 1 to September 24 this year, Juplo said. This is because, in the last two years, they had vaccinated about 40,000 dogs, he said. They also have a continuing drive against stray dogs, he added *CGS
