TFM urging fast land distribution
with SC decision on Hda. Luisita

The Task Force Mapalad-Negros welcomed the Supreme Court decision reaffirming its previous ruling on the distribution of the 4,915-hectare Hacienda Luisita, a press release from the group said.

Alberto Jaime, TFM-Negros president, said the decision will compel the Department of Agrarian Reform to act quickly on the distribution of the sugar estate that should have been transferred to the farmers and sugar workers 50 years ago.

He added that DAR should now take over the property and determine with finality the list of beneficiaries, majority of them members of militant unions belonging to the United Luisita Workers Union, Alyansa ng ng mga Magbubukid sa Luisita, and the Alyansa ng Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luson, the press release added.*

P1.5 M released
to quake victims

Around P1.5 million has been released by the Department of Labor and Employment for the victims of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Negros Oriental, recently, a press release from the agency said.

The cash assistance came through the DOLE's Tulong-Pangkabuhayan sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers program under the Comprehensive Emergency Employment program for rural workers in Ayungon, La Libertad, Jimalalud and Tayasan towns, and Guihulngan City, in the First District, the press release also said.

DOLE officer-in-charge Vivencio Lagahid said that, of the amount, the five local government units will have P300,000 and 100 workers each, for the daily minimum wage of P200 per worker in 15 days.

SU writers workshop
set April 30 to May 19

The 51st Silliman University National Writers Workshop will be held April 30 to May 19, at the Rose Lamb Sobrepeña Writers Village in Camp Look-out, Valencia, Negros Oriental, a press release from the school said.

Eleven writers from all over the Philippines have been accepted as fellows in the workshop. They are CD Borden (University of San Carlos) and Deborah Rosalind Nieto (University of Santo Tomas) for poetry; Michael Aaron Gomez (Silliman University), Thomas David Chavez (Philippine Normal University), Michelle Abigail Tiu Tan (Ateneo de Manila University), Christian Tablazon (University of the Philippines–Diliman), Timothy James Dimacali (University of the Philippines-Diliman), and Ma. Vida Frances Cruz (Ateneo de Manila University) for fiction; Hazel Meghan Hamile (University of the Philippines–Mindanao) and Zendy Victoria Sue Valencia (University of Santo Tomas) for creative non-fiction; and Karlo Antonio David (Ateneo De Davao University) for drama.
