There is no danger of a volcanic eruption from the cracks in Kanlaon Volcano caused by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit Negros Island, an expert from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said yesterday.
“The cracks will not trigger an eruption”, Ma. Antonia Bornas, chief of the PHIVOLCS Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division, said.
She said they are still waiting for an available helicopter, and for the cloud cover to clear in order to make an aerial survey of the volcano.
Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday also said the cracks at the volcano are no cause for alarm.
Large cracks were discovered at the Kanlaon Volcano crater, after a landslide at Margaha Valley following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake, Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park superintendent Cecil Cañada said earlier.
Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles Negros Occidental and Oriental, has been temporarily closed to mountaineers, Cañada said.
Cañada said about three 50-meter long cracks have been spotted near the crater, while other cracks and a landslide have been found within the MKNP.*CPG back
