7 injured in Bacolod accident
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Seven passengers were injured when the jeepney they were riding figured in an accident with a van at the junction of Rizal and Mabini streets, Bacolod City at about 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

Traffic investigator Police Officer 2 Orlando Caporal identified those injured as Rommy Gavitanan, 19, of Brgy. Zone 15 in Talisay City, Negros Occidental; Agnes Pilarta, 50, of Purok Otso in Brgy. 41 and Mary Jane Leonor, 43, of Galo-Mabini streets; Manilyn Paltiquera, 51; Evelyn Niez, 52; Tiza Marie Robles, 30; and Antonio Domingo, 22, of Brgy. Estefania, all of Bacolod.

They were rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and the Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital, and some of them were released later as they only sustained minor injuries, Senior Police Officer 1 Dennis Perma, Traffic Management Unit chief investigator, told the DAILY STAR.

Investigation showed that the jeepney driven by Robert Santiago, 52, of Brgy. Villamonte, plying the Fortune Town-Central Market route, was heading north of Mabini when it collided with the van that was heading west of Rizal Street.

The impact damaged both vehicles that are now impounded at the Bacolod City Police Office headquarters.

Santiago and van driver Alejandro Villarta, 63, of Purok Magtia-yon in Brgy. 10, Bacolod, were unhurt, a police report said.

The TMU is reminding motorists to take extra precautionary measures, especially as it is the rainy season with the roads slippery and prone to accident.

TMU records show that there have been 2,740 accidents recorded in Bacolod in the first six months of 2012.*APN
