Sun Cellular advanced to the semifinals by eliminating TJ Construction, 127-109, in a high-scoring ballgame Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the 1st PROBAC/LNA7 Invitational Basketball Tournament at the West Negros University gym.

Despite trailing 20-28 in the opening quarter, the Cellulars played a better game in the second period to outscore TJ, 30-25, and cut the lead to three points at the half, 50-53.

JR Fernandez nailed 28 points for Sun in the second quarter to slice the lead established by TJ behind Chico Rainer’s 10 points in the first quarter and Ruel Morales’ nine markers in the second.

But Sun came out sizzling in the third as they tallied a 37-23 blast on Dave Docto and Nato Canoy with 11 points each as Mars Echarri hit 10 points while limiting TJ’s scorers to not more than six points.

In the payoff period, TJ tried to cut down the lead after Jojo San Miguel poured 10 points, while teammate Junior Pelingon had nine, but Patric Echarri fired back to neutralize TJ run with 12 makers and Fernandez added eight points.

Fernandez anchored Sun Cellular with game-high 28 points backed by Canoy with 17, Mars Echarri with 16, and Peewee Demonteverde and Patric Echarri with 15 points each.

Meanwhile, Pelingon paced TJ with 20 points as Morales added 17 while Mitchell Alejandro and San Miguel collected 15 points apiece, Rainer with 13, Boboy Berueda with 12 and Jeff Zamora with 10 points.

As of press time, No.1 Toyota-Bacolod was going up against No.8 Ink Crème to be followed by the match between No. 2 Boston Finance and No.7 Fortuna.*NAB
