Nietes ready for
battle vs Salguero

Two weeks from now, Negrense boxing champion and reigning WBO lightflyweight king Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will defend his title against Mexican Felipe Salguero at the Resorts World Hotel and Casino in Manila.

Scheduled on June 2, the “Night of Champions”, the 14th installment of the Pinoy Pride series of ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports, will also feature another tough fighter in the country, Milan Melindo.

Melindo will be facing Colombian Jesus Geles in a 10-round fight.

As Nietes takes on his first defense fight for his new title, Negros Occidental Gov. Afredo Marañon Jr. called on all Negrenses to support and pray for Nietes’ success.

The governor said that boxing remains as the priority sports promoted by the provincial government and he believes that this is where Filipinos can excel.

If not for the special elections in the 5th District, Marañon said he is willing to go to Manila on June 2 to watch Nietes fight.

Earlier, Nietes said he is ready to face Salguero and he’s been training hard in Manila for the forthcoming battle.

Like in his previous matches, the soft-spoken Murcia-born boxer said he can not make any prediction on the outcome of the fight, but he will try his best to knock out his Mexican foe.

Nietes won the hearts of his fellow Negrenses in October last year when he dethroned former WBO lightflyweight champion Raul Garcia in a 12-round fight witnessed by his townmates at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.

While the Mexican camp protested the unanimous decision, boxing pundits asserted it was a clear win for Nietes.*NAB
