Sagay City Vice Mayor Kent Marañon Javelosa, 32, succumbed to lung cancer at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Metro Manila, at about 7 a.m. yesterday, Mayor Rafael Leo Cueva said.
Kent Javelosa’s cousin, Elwin Javelosa, first councilor of Sagay, is expected to assume the vice mayor’s post.
The vice mayor was discovered to have lung cancer only in March, the councilor said last night.
Kent Javelosa was an unopposed United Negros Alliance candidate for vice mayor in next year’s polls. He is expected to be replaced by another candidate coming from his party.
The vice mayor’s father was former Sagay City Mayor Fortunato Javelosa, who also succumbed to cancer in 2005.
Kent Javelosa’s remains arrived at the Bacolod Silay Airport last night, will lie in state at the social hall of the Redemptorist Church in Bacolod City, and may be brought back to Sagay for a brief wake, Cueva said.
The Sagay wake may be on Monday and his funeral is tentatively set for Wednesday at the Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Bacolod City.
Javelosa was a one term councilor, who won as vice mayor of Sagay City in 2010.
He was a very supportive vice mayor, which enabled progress in Sagay City to move faster, Cueva said.
Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said the vice mayor, son of his cousin Susan Marañon Javelosa, had very progressive ideas in public service, business and farming.
Javelosa was one of the first planters to go into organic sugar planting about four years ago, the governor said.
The vice mayor is survived by his wife, Janice Diane, and their children Josef Fort, 7, and Iliana Sue, 3.*CPG back
