La Salle spikers stun
defending champions

The University of St. La Salle signaled its title intentions by pulling off a stunning win over defending champion Doņa Montserrat Lopez National High School Saturday at the start of the Negros leg of the Shakey's Girls' Volleyball League at the USLS College Covered Court.

The La Sallians proved superior on both attack and defense, coming away with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-13 triumph over the Silay-based spikers in the opening-match of the seven-team tournament.

In the other match, Doņa Hortensia Salas National High School made quick work of St. Benilde School, 25-8, 25-13.

St. Scholastica's Academy became the seventh team in the tournament, after confirming its participation Saturday. The other seeing action in the tournament are Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod and La Consolacion College. The winner in the Negros leg will lead the cast in the Tournament of Champions from July 18-21 at the USLS Covered Court.

The Negros winner will meet the champions from Cebu, Iloilo and Manila.

Meanwhile, the La Salle-Greenhills thumped St. Joseph Quezon City in three sets, 25-18, 20-25, 25-13, to advance in the cross-over quarter-final round in the Manila leg at the Blue Eagle Gym yesterday.

The Greenhills spikers also beat St. Jude Catholic School, 25-9, 25-21. St. Joseph was denied a place in the quarterfinals after another three-set loss. Prenza High School earlier subdued St. Joseph, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24, Saturday.

St. Francis of Assisi, meanwhile trounced University of the Philippines Integrated School, 25-10, 25-24, Saturday to join defending champion University of the East, Batasan Hills High School, University of Santo Tomas and Hope Christian School and Prenza in the last 8. *CPT
