WS organizers ready

IF BA-NEG SOFTBELLES MAKE IT TO US

World Series organizers in Williamsport, Pennsylvania are ready to reimburse the Bacolod-Negros softball team $10,000 for their travel expenses as soon as the squad arrives in the United States for the Junior League World Series, Ba-Neg team manager Lagrimas Ciokon said Friday.

Ciokon said that she received confirmation regarding the financial aid from Little League Philippines president Serge Bernal last week. The $10,000 is the World Series counterpart fund for the Asia-Pacific Junior League winner, Ciokon said. The Bacolod-Negros softbelles swept Guam for the As-Pac crown June 15.

"We are happy with the development but then again, we still need to raise the P1.2 million because they (World Series organizers) will only release the money in the US," she said

TnT takes 2-1 lead

Talk 'N Text drew another huge game from Mark Cardona to move within two wins from a finals berth last night when the Phone Pals trounced Red Bull for the second straight time, 106-98, in their PBA Fiesta Cup semifinal series at the Araneta Coliseum. Cardona pumped in 28 points, hauled 10 rebounds and dished five assists as the Phone Pals took a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven series with the Bulls, who are two losses away from getting dethroned.

The Phone Pals' import James Sullinger also scattered 31 points, joining hands with Cardona in the second half to put away Red Bull, which dominated the opening 24 minutes.

"We wanted to take the lead in the series," said TNT coach Derrick Pumaren. "I think we frustrated them, especially on their offense."

The University of St. La Salle signaled its title intentions by pulling off a stunning win over defending champion Doņa Montserrat Lopez National High School Saturday at the start of the Negros leg of the Shakey's Girls' Volleyball League at the USLS College Covered Court.

The La Sallians proved superior on both attack and defense, coming away with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-13 triumph over the Silay-based spikers in the opening-match of the seven-team tournament.

In the other match, Doņa Hortensia Salas National High School made quick work of St. Benilde School, 25-8, 25-13.
