Extortion of OFW kin foiled
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

An attempt to extort from relatives of an Overseas Filipino Worker in Dumaguete by persons who pretend to know the OFW in London , was foiled Monday in Dumaguete City .

Unidentified persons who claimed to be working with the embassy in London informed Reynalda Kilagika in Hagonoy Drive , Northern Junob, Dumaguete through a telephone call that her nephew Albert Dagohoy, was involved in a stabbing incident in London .

The caller demanded P35,000 as payment.

Kilakiga had to look for the amount, and approached a lawyer who cautioned her about the modus operandi of individuals who victimize relatives of OFWs.

Accompanied by the lawyer, prospective victims reported the scheme to the police. The suspects, however, can no longer be located, the police said.

The same scam had victimized several relatives of OFWs in the province, one in Siaton who sent P100,000, another in Tamisu, Bais City who sent P50,000 through money transfer recently.

In Mangnao, Dumaguete, Sally Arrieta noted the same modus operandi. She immediately called her daughter Lea in Dubai and the story about her turned out to be false.

Meanwhile, a highway robbery suspect 22 years ago was finally arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation in Dumaguete in Lukewright street during the Dumaguete City Charter Day anniversary on November 25.

Arrested by joint NBI and Dumaguete PNP is Emerito “Buddy” Oreta Caña, of Barangay Culipapa, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental.

Caña and four others were accused of robbing Marcelino Vendiola, a salesman of Dumaguete Industries and Marketing Corporation in a secluded place in Nagboalao, Basay on May 21 with P39,000 in cash.

The victim and his driver were hogtied while the suspects fled in a pumpboat.

Caña is presently detained at the Negros Oriental Detention and Rehabilitation Center with bail bond recommended at P25,000 for his temporary liberty.

The case is lodged at Regional Trial Court Branch 39 in Negros Oriental.*JG
