Rains trigger landslide,
houses destroyed
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Heavy rains hit Sipalay City yesterday triggering a landslide that rendered the highway impassable for almost seven hours.

The rains also caused flooding in eight barangays, affecting 1,543 families, destroying four houses and damaging 24 others in Sipalay, Negros Occidental Provincial Social Welfare Officer Liane Garcia said yesterday.

The landslide hit Barangay Mambaroto, Sipalay, about 2 kilometers from the city proper, but no one was hurt, Sipalay Mayor Soledad Montilla said.

Garcia said the landslide that occurred at 4 a.m. rendered the highway impassable until it was cleared at about 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, flooding occurred in barangays 2, 3, 5, Gil Montilla, Nauhang, Cabadiangan, Cartegena and Mambaroto in Sipalay City, she said.

In some areas water was up to knee level, she said, and the continuous rains were making it difficult to deliver aid.

Flooding was also reported in barangays 1, Andulauan, Consuelo, Delicioso, Vista Alegre and Calubang in Ilog town.

A Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration report as of 2 p.m. yesterday said Typhoon Bebeng was 930 kms east northeast of Catanduanes (17.3°N, 132.9°E) or 1,100 kms east southeast of Aparri, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.*CPG
