IN BINALBAGAN
Soldiers nab 'rebel'

Soldiers of the 61st Infantry Battalion raided a harboring area of suspected New People's Army rebels in Brgy. Bi-ao, Binalbagan on Sunday, which led to the capture of an alleged insurgent and the recovery of two firearms, the military said.

Nabbed by soldiers was Regie Credito, 19, of the barangay. Troopers recovered a .30 caliber garand rifle with one clip of ammunition, and a .38 caliber revolver. Lt. Col. Erwin de Asis, 3rd Infantry Division information officer, yesterday said soldiers of the 61st IB were on combat operations, when they chanced upon a group of persons suspected to be rebels staying in a makeshift structure in a cluster of houses in the barangay.

While soldiers were approaching the area, the unidentified persons fled without firing a single shot, leaving behind Credito and the two firearms, De Asis said.

Credito is now undergoing debriefing at the 61st IB headquarters in Brgy. Tiling, Cauayan, Negros Occidental.

The recovery of two guns brought to nine the number of firearms accounted for by the 61st IB since last month, which included five M-16 armalite rifles, a garand rifle, an Ingram machine pistol, a carbine and .38 caliber revolver, military records show.

Basco, in his report to Col. Honorato de los Reyes, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said the seven firearms were surrendered by three rebel returnees, to avail of the Balik-Baril program of the government.*GPB

Kilo of marijuana confiscated

A kilo of suspected dried marijuana leaves was confiscated by the police from an arrested drug peddler in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday.

Supt. Harold Tuzon yesterday identified the arrested suspect as Allen Leduna, 28, of Brgy. Punao, in San Carlos.

Tuzon, San Carlos police chief, said the arrest of Leduna during a buy-bust operation at the Center Mall in Brgy. Palampas, San Carlos, yielded two bundles of dried marijuana leaves and its fruiting, estimated at one kilo, and P500 in marked money.

Police investigations show that marijuana from Balamban, Cebu, was monitored to have been shipped through the port of San Carlos City.

Charges for violation of Republic Act 9165, known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002, is now being readied for filing against Leduna who is now detained at the city police station jail of San Carlos.

The buy-bust operation was led by Tuzon and Senior Inspector Victorino Romanillos, assisted by a team of intelligence operatives led by SPO3 Ramon Bartulin Sr.*

File raps, police urge
family of slain farmer

The military yesterday enjoined the family of a farmer who was brutally killed on Thursday in Brgy. Menchaca, Calatrava, Negros Occidental, to immediately file charges against the suspects they claimed to have identified.

Warlito Clerigo claimed that his elder brother, Alano, was picked up from his residence in the barangay by two Army soldiers and a CAFGU member he identified as Silvestre Abeso on Oct. 10. The body of Alano, which showed signs of being tortured as claimed by his family was discovered in a shallow grave, the next day.

Maj. Nathaniel Villasor, 303rd Infantry Brigade Civil Military Operations officer, yesterday said the barbaric and inhuman act could not be perpetrated by soldiers.

Villasor said they have already dispatched investigators to Brgy. Menchaca, Calatrava, to investigate the incident.

Inspector Danilo Zuniega, Calatrava police chief, yesterday said he was told by family members of Clerigo that they will pursue the filing of charges against the suspects after the burial of Alano.

Alano reportedly served as among the guides of Karapatan-Negros and its allied organizations, in the conduct of fact-finding missions on alleged military atrocities in northern Negros.*GPB
