The Dumaguete City Health Office has reiterated its call to the public to take extra protection against heatstroke and dehydration due to extreme humidity or sun exposure.
People are suffering from high temperature, especially in summer and this may lead to heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses, Dr. Maria Sarah Talla, city health officer, said.
Heatstroke occurs when the body overheats due to the hot and humid weather, and too much direct exposure to the sun, which can be fatal, Talla said, adding that residents can experience prickly heat or rashes because of the clogging of sweat glands.
Too much heat exposure may result in dehydration, nausea, vomiting, weakness, headache and fatigue and sometimes, increased respiratory rate, rapid pulse and strange behavior, she said.
Bring umbrellas or hats to cover bodies and heads when going outside homes or offices, the CHO advised.
It added that drinking a lot of water is needed to replenish what has been lost through sweat. If possible, avoid physical activities for long under the heat of the sun; or wear loose clothing with light colored materials to circulate air in the body, she added.*
