Classes at La Consolacion College in Bacolod City have been temporarily cancelled since Tuesday because of earthquake aftershocks that are not conducive for the students to return to school, Rodjhun Navaro, head of the school’s Alumni and External Affairs Service, said yesterday.
Navaro said that the school management met on Tuesday and decided not to hold classes because the students cannot concentrate if the aftershocks continue.
He denied that the reason for the cancellation of classes is because the school buildings had damages after the earthquake.
“We assure the parents that the school buildings have no damages and are safe. The buildings were in fact inspected by the engineers, architects and the staff of the Bacolod City Office of the Building Official,” Navaro stressed.
The classes at the elementary and high school levels will resume Monday, while classes for the National Service Training Program in the college level and the Graduate School Department will resume tomorrow.
On Wednesday, the students of LCC-Bacolod underwent a stress debriefing and the school will hold more disaster preparedness lessons next week, Navaro said.
LCC-Bacolod has 1,200 elementary students, 1,000 high school students and 3,000 college students.
Joemarie Vargas, head of the Bacolod City Risk Reduction Management Council, said except for LCC-Bacolod, no other school in the city still has cancelled classes.*APN back
