2 cops cited for arrest
of ‘notorious’ pickpocket

Two police officers received special citations for their arrest of a suspected pickpocket at the city’s downtown area Thursday, from Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, Bacolod City Police Office director, in yesterday’s flag raising rites.

Cited were Police Officers 1 John Lamis and Juice Lou Jimenez, who arrested Monjune Delfin, 29, of Abada Escay in Brgy. Granada, Bacolod, at the junction of Rizal and Gatuslao Streets.

Luzviminda de los Reyes, 61, of Purok Greenfield, Brgy. Tangub, told the police she was on a passenger jeep at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, when Delfin stole her P2,500 in cash that was in the right pocket of her pants, and alighted from the vehicle.

Delfin, whom police tagged as a notorious pickpocket victimizing elderly jeepney passengers, admitted the theft but said he was forced to steal as he needed money for the school needs of his four children.

Delfin is now detained at the lockup cell of Police Station 1 and is facing charges for theft.*APN

BCPO lacks men to
police  assistance centers: Leada

The establishment of community police assistance centers in crime-prone areas of Bacolod is being hindered by lack of personnel, Senior Insp. Lester Leada, chief of the City Police Operations Branch, said yesterday.

Leada said the crime incidents can be resolved if there are assistance centers in crime-prone areas. But while they cannot establish the centers yet, the police will boost beat patrols to deter crime occurrences.

He said they will also beef up security measures at the Bacolod downtown area, where people usually converge, and in Brgy. Villamonte, where house burglaries often occur.

City Police Director, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, said that the lack of personnel is not a problem in Bacolod only, but also in other parts of the country.

He added that since there are not enough policemen, the Bacolod City Police Office makes use of force multipliers. He said he has plans to ask for more policemen to be deployed to Bacolod for their anti-criminality drive.

He said they only have about 520 policemen, or a ratio of one policeman for every 1,200 residents.

Leada added that they will make a list of crime-prone areas in Bacolod for 2012. An area will be tagged as crime-prone based on the number of crimes happening in the place, he said.*APN
