About 1,100 protesters from two rallies marched on the streets of Bacolod City yesterday to celebrate the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day.
Gabriela-Negros and the Liga sang Kababaihan nga Mamumugon sa Negros lobbied for different causes, but challenged the government to act on their demands saying that women continue to be victims of labor injustices and economic abuses.
Gabriela is supported by the Iglesia Filipina Indepediente-Philippines whose bishops and priests attended and blessed their rally.
IFI Bishop Joselito Cruz said they challenge the government and the administration of President Benigno Aquino III to really serve the people and not just a minority of the people.
The bishops and national officers of IFI-Philippines were in Bacolod City for a two-day executive meeting.
Rina Amacio, secretary general of Gabriela said they want immediate action from Aquino to repeal the Oil Deregulation Law that caused the continuous increase of oil prices and to abolish the expanded value added tax on oil products.
Gabriela also slammed Aquino for his decision to allow 38 foreign companies to start the oil exploration in 15 areas in the country including the West Philippine Sea.
The LKM-Negros, on the other hand, demanded jobs and labor justice for women through additional budget for the social services, Corazon Aghon, its chairperson said. *LTG back
