Barredo files bid vs. Ferrer;
Tuvilla makes comeback, too

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Former board members of Negros Occidental are making comebacks through the 2013 polls.

Lawyer Ike Barredo filed his certificate of candidacy for congressman of the fourth district, while Joseph Gerard Tuvilla filed his comeback bid as board member of the fifth district of Negros Occidental before the provincial COMELEC in Bacolod City yesterday.

The filing by Barredo came on the heels of the declaration of La Carlota Mayor Juliet Marie Ferrer Wednesday that she and her husband, Rep. Jeffery Ferrer (Neg. Occ., 4th District), are supporting the reelection bid of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. of the United Negros Alliance.

Rep. Ferrer is a member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition that is fielding Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. as its gubernatorial bet.

The congressman, who is expected to file his CoC today, said Barredo is “welcome to the race and may the best man win.”

Barredo, who has served as board member of Negros Occidental for nine years, is running as an NPC Independent bet. He said he is supporting the gubernatorial bid of Alvarez.

His background as a lawyer will come in handy in crafting legislation for the good of the fourth district, Negros Occidental and the country, he said.

Tuvilla, 53, who had served as board member of the fifth district for three years, is running for his old post under the United Negros Alliance and is supporting Marañon.

He said his campaign slogan is “I’m healed”, because his political detractors are telling residents of the fifth district that he is sick.

Tuvilla said he had retired from politics after he suffered a heart attack and underwent surgery in 2007. Today, he is healed and is ready to run for board member to serve the people again, Tuvilla added.

The people made him number one board member in 2004 and he kept his promise to act on their health needs, livelihood and dignity, which he will continue to do if re-elected, Tuvilla said.

“I am supporting the governor because of his programs that have been pro-people and pro-poor,” Tuvilla said, citing Marañon’s health and livelihood programs and push to make Negros Occidental the livestock capital.

Others who filed their CoCs yesterday before the provincial COMELEC were Arturo Alvarez (Independent) for board member of the 4th District, Raul Baterna (Independent) – 2nd District board member, Leopoldo Sua (Independent) – 1st District congressman, and Leonardo Erola (Independent) – 4th District congressman.*CPG
