Kayak team named
world's 4th best

MANILA - The Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation squad brought home six gold medals and a silver in stripping world-acclaimed and long-time dragon boat powerhouse Germany of its reputation in the just concluded 22nd International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships in Italy.

Six Navy athletes, who were part of the victorious Philippine team, paid a courtesy call and reported their accomplishments to Vice Admiral Alexander Pama, the Philippine Navy’s Flag Officer in Command.

The Philippines bested over 10 other countries and remarkably gained the same number of gold garnered by another powerhouse Hungary in a momentous participation.

The squad is now proclaimed as the world’s 4th best, according to the International Canoe Federation, the only recognized International Federation by the International Olympic Committee.

The Philippine Team was composed of only 28 athletes and officials and participated in only seven events.

The championship was conducted from August 30 to September 2, 2012 at the Idroscalo Club in Milan.

On Monday, the Navy athletes –Leonora Escollante, Manuel Maya, Raquiel Espinosa, Alex Sumagaysay, Edward Balbuena, and Alberto Hugo, reported their accomplishment to Pama at the Philippine Navy Headquarters in Manila.

Pama congratulated the six Navy personnel for their accomplishment.

Capt Narciso A Vingson, Acting Chief for Personnel, and Marine Col Romeo Racadio, The Naval Special Services Officer, accompanied the athletes during the courtesy call.*PNA
